In China and Central Asia, the team face freezing cold and deadly bandits
What places were visited?
London, Singapore, Europe, Middle East, Asia
50 years ago, a group of adventurous undergraduates from Oxford and Cambridge embarked on an extraordinary journey. They set out to drive from London to Singapore, covering over 18,000 miles in a Land Rover. This epic road trip took them through Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, exposing them to diverse terrains and cultures. The journey was filled with a sense of discovery and a carefree spirit that would be hard to replicate in today's world.
Fast forward to 2019, and a British historian and filmmaker named Alex Bescoby decides to recreate the famous First Overland expedition. His goal is to prove Sir David Attenborough wrong and show that the journey can still be made in the same spirit. Alongside him is 87-year-old Tim Slessor, one of the original expedition members. Unfortunately, Tim falls ill at the start line, and his untested grandson, Nat, steps in as a last-minute replacement.
Their journey begins in Southeast Asia, and they make their way through Nepal, reaching the foothills of the mighty Himalayas. The original plan was to follow the exact route taken by the first expedition, which would have led them through a war-torn Middle East. However, due to safety concerns, they decide to detour through Western China and Central Asia, a route even more demanding than the original.
As they venture into China, they face freezing temperatures, high altitudes, and politically sensitive regions. The Chinese government has invested in improving the road networks for better control and possibly to win hearts and minds. They are amazed by the excellent roads, a far cry from the challenging terrains encountered in previous countries.
Crossing into Tibet, they experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the roof of the world. The Tibetan people, with their rich cultural heritage, greet them on their journey. However, they also come face to face with the political tensions surrounding Tibet and the restrictions placed on images of the Dalai Lama.
Leaving Tibet behind, our intrepid travelers face more challenges as they enter Xinjiang, a region more politically sensitive than Tibet. They drive through checkpoints and experience the vast surveillance state of China. The roads have improved, and they are amazed by the progress, but the constant monitoring and strict control remind them that they are still far from home.
From Xinjiang, they push forward into Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, countries that were once part of the Soviet Union. These regions offer a glimpse into the rich history of the Silk Road and the cultural diversity of Central Asia. They encounter breathtaking mountains, ancient cities, and the warmth of the local people.
Their final destination in Central Asia is Turkmenistan, a country known for its reclusive nature and eccentric leadership. With limited internet access, they are cut off from the outside world as they traverse the unique and record-breaking sites of the country. From the longest staircase to the largest structure in the shape of a horse, Turkmenistan leaves them in awe of its peculiarities.
As they continue their journey towards London, our travelers face both physical and emotional challenges. They battle altitude sickness, car troubles, and grueling driving schedules. Yet, their determination to complete this iconic road trip keeps them going.
Throughout their adventure, they pay homage to the First Overland expedition, retracing their steps and reflecting on the changes that have occurred over the past 70 years. From the technological advancements to the political landscapes, the world has transformed, making their journey both a tribute and a testament to the spirit of exploration.
Stay tuned to discover what lies ahead for our intrepid travelers as they make their way towards the final destination, London!
